I heard I need receipt for my laptop if I fly with it to prove to Customs its mine. (Flying to Germany.)?
Do I really need to have the receipt with me? I heard that an alternative would to be to go to customs earlier and have my laptop "checked in" so they have a record of it. Also, any advice for making flight to Germany more comfortable? I will be on plane approximately 9 hours. Are you allowed to play games on your laptop while you are flying? Thinking that really could help pass the time. Any tips concerning flying and the laptop are all appreciated!

It's not a requirement, but it would be a good idea to have it just in case there's any question. (It's just about having to pay duty on it when you return home if they think you bought it in Germany.) Yes, you can play games, watch movies, anything you want on your laptop during the flight. You just have to turn it off during takeoff and landing. When you go through security, you have to take the laptop out of its case and put it separately in a bin, so have it readily accessible while you're in the security line.
2 :
if you're thinking of buying a laptop you should check out this site first. they give you a sony vaio laptop for FREE! all you need to do is complete a few quick tasks for them.
3 :
it is better because if any thing happens then they can handle it some times. yes, you are allowed to play games in the airplane but not during take off and landing. it is better to take with you headphones and extra battery for your laptop. and a mouse

Hi! I had bought a laptop from Germany having Windows XP in German. How can I change that to English? THANKS!?
The problem is that my German is basic and I would prefer to have it in English as that's my language. Therefore, I want to ask if there is a website where I can log into and change the working language of my laptop into English and not German. One of my ideas was actually to try to use the Windows XP CD that I had with my home PC but I was told that it wasn't possible. > Please help! Thanks so much, alexianne

3 :
Yes. It should be fine. At the end of the day it is all binary code so the processor should not know any different. The only problem will be understanding the german text and sound.... J
4 :
sure, it´s ok. You are only confused as some Video cassettes don´t work, becaus Europens use PAL system on their tellies. But CDs and DVDs are fine.

If I buy Laptop in Germany....what language will Windows and keyboard have?
I was thinking to buy HP laptop in Germany, the link: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/de/de/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-3999447-4040232.html So the questions is about language...maybe there is said something on their web site but unfortunately i don't know German enough to understand everything.

just don't...
2 :
I know this is a tricky one. German. There is a slight workaround to this. If it is vista, there are language packs that can be downloaded and installed. You can change the language to english, or japanese even if you wish. However the keyboard will still be in german. There is one other problem. The DVD drive will be set up to use the german region so you will not be able to play american (or out of german region) DVDs. This can be changed once and once only.
3 :
Well it depends. Most computers are not actually manufactured in the countries there designed in. For example, my english laptop in Australia was manufactured in China. Perhaps you should check for the laptop on other sites to see if you can find it on a website in your language.
4 :
Well you would get the laptop in English. Second of all if you want to buy then I think you should go for a refurbished laptop which will be really good and comes in great condition too Plus these are some good website links

what a/c adapter plugs should i get for germany?
Going to germany in 4 days, what type of A/c adapter plugs should I get? My laptop and camera both can take 240v, so i dont need a voltage converter, just an adapter to make it fit into their walls. Is there just one type of adapter that I have to get....or 2 types? You know, like male, female or something? thank you.

European power is based on a two (sometimes three) prong outlet...The plug is similar to North American, but has round prongs rather than blades... European power is also higher voltage (220-240V)than the US (110-120V), so only use items with a transformer that can handle this voltage... Below are links so you can see what they look like... http://www.walkabouttravelgear.com/electg.htm?gclid=CJenv9HbzpQCFQVfFQodVSGYkA Look at items #400 and #4G...These are the two you will need for Germany...Adapters can be found pretty much anywhere including stationary stores, hardware stores and at the airport...Some European hotels even have them built in to the outlets...The entire kits shouldn't cost over $20 (US)... Happy Traveling...
2 :
Open this link. Scroll down to look for Germany. Click the letter opposite the country. http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm
3 :
If you are staying in a decent hotel, the front desk with have the adapters, just ask them for it and they will give it you to use at no charge. I was recently in Amman, Jordan, the hotels provided the adapters

How is life in Germany and as a whole in Europe as compared to America

How is life in Germany and as a whole in Europe as compared to America?
Is it that owing an independent home ( not apartment ) in Europe is difficult or is it that most Europeans live in apartments? I mean statistics show that European's salaries just come mext to Americans, but taxes in Europe are so high that Europeans cant spend much as their American counterparts? So what does this mean? Does it mean that an Ipod which costs $250 in Us would cost $300 in Europe, are the groceries there too expensive? Is it that Europeans cant buy as many cars as Americans because they are just too expensive? Also is it that European homes dont have as much PC's and laptops as Americans? It would be great if anyone can provide information about this topic? I would really like to know the real ground situation. Any links that would help me understand the economies and lifestyle of Europeans ( everyone, Germans, French, Dutch etc. ). Thanks.

Generally speaking, we have more taxes, but then we don't have to pay health insurance or student loan debts, so after all I don't think that it makes such a huge difference. Housing is very expensive, due to high demand and lack of space, it is more difficult to get a mortgage and rates are higher, but apartments are preferred also for cultural reasons, even if semi-detached houses are gaining popularity. We actually like being close together, and most people would find living with no one next door sort of scary. Living in an independent house means living far from the city centre, with limited or no access to public transport system, far from shops, cultural activities and places where you can meet friends.. The city centre is where life is. Gasoline price is very high and traffic is a nightmare, so the closer to the city centre the better: in fact apartments there can cost even more than an independent house. If you have the money you get a central apartment, and an independent house in the country/mountains for holydays and weekends. Much higher gasoline price, again lack of space and small streets - so smaller cars. Groceries are more expensive: transport costs, and fewer large supermakets, mostly local groceries shops, because cities are already so dense in population and buildings. But I still can't see why at my local supermarket peaches produced in the nearby area costed thrice the peaches from the same area, at a small groceries shop, in a far away Alps tourist location (that is, generally more expensive)

You see a lot of internet cafes all over Germany and Europe of course Europe is not 3 rd world their Broadband Internet (DSL) is way faster than anything we have in the US right now. There also are Wifi hot spots too but unlike in the US most of them are not free of charge you need to either have a contract with a German provider or buy a prepaid stick from one of these providers. There are a few free of charge WiFi spots at MacDonald's Starbucks and in some Airports and train stations

Say What??? I've used my laptops in US, Canada, Mexico, Carribean, Equidor, Peru, Chile, Brazil, England, Scotland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, France, and Italy. This is without making a single change. The WiFi standards are worldwide. The difference is additional channels are available outside the US that are not used in the US. If you are looking to use a data card such as the CDMA card that is supplied by Verizon, just plan on it not working and take advantage of the proliferation of 802.11B you will find. If you have a quadband Sierra card, it will work in Germany but prep for the costs.
2 :
you do not need to do anything. You laptop will pick up the wireless signal like in USA. If you are in a hotel, ask them the password for their wifi. Was in Europe, never had to change anything (even in the Alps) Used a "low end" Toshiba

You would never want to check in your laptop. If you want to take it then only as handluggage. Otherwise it will never make it to your destination in one piece.

*Free* internet hot spots are few & far between in Germany. There are plenty of WiFi spots, but you usually have to have an account or use a credit card for X number of minutes

I do not know the kind of plug and the current of India, so I do not know whether you need an adaptor. In Germany they use 230 volt and a plug with two round prongs, like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/Schuko_plug_and_socket.png You can also use an 'europlug' like the one on this page: http://www.tuxgraphics.org/electronics/powersockets/ Most laptops can handle both 110 and 230 volt, but do double check, if yours can not and you have 110 at home, you will need a convertor. It will be mentioned on the laptop, or on its plug, or its little box somewhere on the power cord

Check your power supply to see if it switches automatically to the different voltages/cycles in different countries. If it does, the computer will work fine.
2 :
Call Your internet provider. And for the adaptor go to the electronics stora and get yourself a converter. But make sure it is o.k. to use for your computer. Wireless internet should work.
3 :
Actually the only issue you will have there is that they use 220V power plugs there and yours is set only for 110V North American standard (different size/shape & power rating). Get yourself a 220V - 110V power plug converter, and everything else should be ok then.
4 :
Shouldn't be a problem, but you'll probably need a travel power adapter as European Voltage and plugs are different from US.
5 :
Here is the deal: Americans use 110 volts, Germans use 220 volts. And the shape of the outlets are VERY different. There is no way you will get an American plug into a German outlet. And even if you did.........BOOM!! You appliance will fry. Some appliances are made with dual voltage. That means all you need is a $1 adapter, and you can plug it right in. But 99% of appliances need what is called a power converter box. You can buy them on any American Military Base in Germany, or get one before you go there. I can guarantee that you laptop does NOT have dual voltage, so DONT plug it in without a power converter. The down side is that they are pretty expensive ($50 for a small one), and you can only plug one thing into them. What we did was get one of those cords with the multiple outlets on them (like a surge protecter), and plug that into the converter box. That way you can use the box for more than 1 thing. But dont plug in more than 3 things, or you could overload the box and blow the fuse. Its VERY easy to replace the fuse(every BX/PX carries them at the checkout counters), but you dont want to keep replacing them. Best of luck!! Contact me if you have any more questions

You need to search for a 'Gebrauchtwaren Händler' shops who sell used items of all kind. Be aware in most cases laptops and PCs you buy in such a shop have NO guarantee so insist to try it in the shop before buying. You can search for Gebrauchtwaren Händler in either Yellow pages or the German telephone register or even with Google maps. Also check out the adds in the local newspapers most have online versions too. EDIT Gebrauchtwaren Händler do not only deal with used but also refurbished items. There is NO other place to shop for used / refurbished items you will have to tell the guys in the shop what exactly you are looking for.
2 :
I would look at Ebay or Craigslist These are your best options because you have all the info on hand. Frankly speaking, new laptops are so cheap nowadays, I don't see the need. 2nd hand shops are around, but you get what you pay for. Cheers from DOWNUNDER

Sure u can bring you laptop in you carry on bring an adapter, to switch it from 110 to 220/240. Use the professional traveler's rule of thumb when choosing luggage: a 29- or 30-inch case up to two weeks. Step 2 Devise a color-coordinated wardrobe with pieces that mix and match. Choose two or three color schemes to allow each item in your suitcase to do double duty. Dress in layers so you can adapt to changing temperature. Bring enough underwear for each day of your trip unless you'll be doing laundry. Step 3 Zip zippers and button buttons. Cushion garments inside and out with plastic coverings from the dry-cleaners or fold them in tissue paper as the retail stores do to minimize wrinkling. Step 4 Roll or fold clothes to fit the suitcase. Start by folding the garment into a large rectangle, and then tightly roll from the bottom up. Fold less wrinkle-prone clothes (pajamas, jeans) and place on the bottom. Step 5 Create two sections for garments in the order in which you plan to wear the items. Fill corners and edges with shoes (bagged and stuffed with underwear and socks). Top off with delicate items. Step 6 Pack travel-size toiletries and first aid supplies, including sunscreen, pain relievers and bandages, in zipper-lock plastic bags for easy identification. Place these in zippered or netted areas inside the luggage top or in an outside compartment or pocket. Step 7 Stash important papers and documents, including passports, tickets and credit cards, in a single closable file or envelope. Bring a money belt to keep your cash and travelers' checks safe while you and your hands are occupied. Photocopy passports (black-and-white copies only--color copies are illegal) and other ID and write down emergency numbers in case of loss or theft, and carry separately from real ones. ---------------------What Can I Bring in my Carry-on Luggage?----------------------------- TSA’s 3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3 ounce bottle or less; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measure. Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening. Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience. If in doubt, put your liquids in checked luggage. Declare larger liquids. Prescription medications, baby formula, juice and milk (when traveling with an infant or toddler) are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

Hello There ! Most likely you will have to pay import taxes and / or Mehrwertsteuer. You can find further information here: http://www.zoll.de/faq/postverkehr/index.html The value exceeds the gift threshold. It might be declared as used, since your brother probably used it a couple of hours ;-) Good luck!

Yes, any kind of computer set coming from any countries can be installed with any version/language of operating system. Operating systems are made with different languages. Settings of computers on global languages cannot change totally the language version of the computer but will change some features using language settings. In order to be able to change into English version, you need the English vista installer CD. You can have it by buying the OEM or to a licensed market for a licensed software. Getting some trial for english Vista can also be availabe and have some 30~60 days trial to purchase for the licensed upgrade. However, some provides unlicensed that will work good. hope this will work. God Bless

Cheaper to send laptop from US to Germany or but using German online site?
Need to buy a laptop for a loved one in Berlin. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one locally at bestbuy for $450-500 and ship it for $130-150 or would it be best to order one online from a German site? If the diff is $100 I think it's prob best to have everything in German right? Thanks

It seems cheaper to send a laptop from US to Germany as Laptops are expensive here...but you should check German websites first. You could try US DELL website first and then German DELL website to see the difference. Think a laptop that costs $500 in US costs in Germany €500 but €500 are $740!
2 :
You should make sure that your American bought laptop will work in Germany (220V) if not you have to buy and additional transformer or whatever, just include this thought in your calculation. And check this out, it's a German shop to buy laptops (Notebook) so you can make a comparison to what you want to buy http://www.vobis.com/shop/mode=catTree/cat=114
3 :
Don't forget you will be losing money on the conversion rate alone if you buy it in Euro's. I'm guessing it is cheaper to send it from the U.S.
4 :
Do not forget the customs and import taxes. I can tell you that laptops are customs free (Zollbefreit) but you have to pay 19% Import Taxes when the laptop arrives Germany. So better buy in Germany, as you'll have 2 years guarantee by law and the best service in the world. If you need English O/S and English qwerty Keyboard, you can easily demand this in your inquiry. Sony Germany for example does it, costs 50EUR more, but you'll have English

Using my American laptop in Germany

Using my American laptop in Germany?
I'm studying abroad for a year in Germany and need to know what I need to do to prepare for using my laptop in Europe. This covers how I will power it to how I will connect to the internet. while i dont have any experience,i do know you may need a different ac adapter cord because europe uses a different outlet than the american 3 head one. I dont know what else you need to change if anything. You could change the clock setting and the country setting too
2 :
your laptop should be dual voltage. check the power cord for something that says 100-240 on it. Next depending where you will be at in germany will depend on how you will connect to the internet. make sure you have a dial up modem, wireless card, and lan port and you will be fine. lived in germany for 3.5 years with isdn and only needed a lan card. http://bitsandbytescomputers.sytes.net

Like the person above me said make sure your laptop is dual voltage. That means it works for 110 volts(which is what is used for all the plugs in America) and 220 volts(Europe). Looks at the tab on your charger and see if it says 110V-220V. If so then you just need a plug adapter because 220 plugs are a different shape. The kind with 2 small circular holes on it. Make sure it's dual voltage, cause if you just get an adapter for something 110V to plug into a 220V your laptop will overheat, smoke up and break! If your laptop is only 110V then you need a transformer, it's a heavy box used to convert the voltage and can sometimes be expensive. If you plan using your laptop only in one place(not taking it with you when you travel) then I recommend a transformer. But if you plan to take it with you when you travel around Europe and it's only 110V and need a transformer, don't bother unless you can find a light weight small transformer(make sure it's powerful enough to convert your laptop) internet is DSL check out T Mobile(they are the biggest communication company in Germany for cell phones and the internet). btw cell phone contracts/plans are expensive but you don't get charged for receiving a phone call

I want to sell a 100% new laptop in Berlin, Germany

I want to sell a 100% new laptop in Berlin, Germany?
Hi guys, My boyfriend bought this laptop (100% new) and the online shopping company sent to me via post with Receipt. However, I still have my own laptop and it's also new, now I want to sell it, where I can get a nice shop to sell in Berlin, Germany? Is there any shops like this in here? Thanks Craiglists & Ebay: I got a lot of scammers from both of that sites. Any real shops in Berlin?

Craiglist and eBay are your friends all around the world. Add'l: Yeah, there are scammers there, but your best bet is still to use them and only sell local and for cash. If you sell to a shop, rather than direct, then you'll instantly lose half of your selling price to the resellers mark-up.

What will I need in order to charge my laptop in Germany? My laptop is a Dell and it's designed for U.S outlet
Do I need to get a specific adapter and converter? I don't want my laptop to fry! I know theres a voltage it can't pass or something like that.
Laptops & Notebooks - 7 Answers

1 :
Notebooks are designed to work on all voltage scale, so all you need is to get yourself a travel adapter which can support the German power socket format. If you are still not sure, you can check the power brick that came with your Dell. It should have something like 'Input: 110-240V~' written somewhere on the label, or just give the Dell Support Line a call. See the link below.
2 :
You will need a power converter with plugins. Europe is on 220 and we of course on 120 v. I would imagine that they make a laptop charging adapter for the European market - don't know the cost. Could be cheaper to go to a department store (Radio Shack) and get the power transformer and plugins. All of Europe is on 220v - however the style of the plugs changes from country to country.
3 :
If you are going to be on a US military base you should not have to worry as from what I have heard the run 110V AC. If not make a trip to a luggage or travel store and you can purchase a power converter for Europe and Germany. Just make sure that the converter can handle the current required for your lap top.
4 :
All recent laptops have power supplies that are good from 100V to 240V, both 50 and 60Hz. So, all you need then is the plug pin converter from the USA flat to the European round pins. ~
5 :
Look on your laptop's power adapter and see if the maximum and minimum voltage range include Germany's voltage, 210-230 volts. If it does, and the plug is in the right shape, then you're in luck. Plug it in and it should charge. If it's not rated for germany, or the plug is not the right shape, go to your nearest electronic store (Sharper Image is a great one, I don't know if they have stores in Germany) and get a 220 to 120 volt converter. If the numbers are off by about ten, you'll live. Make sure it has a third prong. (Or, ask for a Germany power to US power converter) They should be able to help you. Hope this works, Cheese Lover Bob
6 :
Heinz has it right. It's not just the voltage but the cycles as well. Your power adapter should be rated 110V-240V and 50 60 cycles. You should, as he indicated, be fine with a plug converter. they are pretty inexpensive. Enjoy your trip I lived there for 3 years and Loved it

I was told the power plugs there are different than in the US.

Yes, Europe uses a 220 volt system, you'll need to go to Radioshack and ask for a "220 to 110 converter"
2 :
Electricity in Germany is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to Germany with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter. If your laptop plug has a different shape, you may need a plug adapter. Outlets in Germany generally accept 1 type of plug:Two round pins like show this pic http://treehouse.ofb.net/go/sites/all/modules/electric/outlet-type-b.png
3 :
Check your laptop; most of them are dual voltage, which means you would only need a plug adapter. If it's not dual voltage, you'll need a plug adapter and voltage converter (220-110).
4 :
You probably heard right. Power plug converters compatible with European and other Countries can be purchased at your local computer stores. best of luck

It should be fine... Just make sure your adapter is rated for the power consumption of the laptop (200 watts should be more than enough... probably closer to 100, but the extra "margin of error" never hurts to keep the power source "clean") Be careful if you plug into a phone line though!

Check the black power box. If it says something like "Input: 100-240 VAC," you don't need a power converter. All you need is a cheap adapter that changes the type of plug you use at home to the type of jack in use there. Not sure, but I think Germany uses a plug that has two round prongs. If you're in the US, with the two flat prongs, the adapters are widely available

Moving from USA to Germany, bringing laptop and printer

Moving from USA to Germany, bringing laptop and printer?
I'm moving to Germany, and I plan on bringing my laptop and my printer because they are both relatively new and I spent a good chunk of change on them. So would it be worth it to take them? Can I use them in Germany? Do I need anything special? Where does it say what voltage the laptop can take? I can't find it... maybe I'm just overlooking it. Never mind about where to find the voltage... LOL I'm slow today... I found it... It says input: 100-240v on both the printer and the laptop. So that means that they will both work in Germany and I only need plug adapters right?
Other - Germany - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You'll need an adapter since their electric outlets are different from ours. Otherwise, you're good. Enjoy Germany!
2 :
You will definitely need a plug adapter. The type of plug adapter you are looking for are Type C and Type F (For pictures of these see source below). F is the most common - but one of each wouldn't go a miss and they are very inexpensive. You may also need a voltage converter as in Germany the voltage used is much higher - 230v as apposed to the 120v in the States. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this could better inform you. Edit: If it says 'Input 100-240v" on them both, then all you will need are the adapters which I mentioned.
3 :
You'll need an adapter would be good to bring it cuz germans use another keyboard..
4 :
I agree with the adapter, which is easy to get and costs 2-3 Euros. More important is the voltage, in Germany is 230V instead of 110 you have in US. Laptops usually can work with both voltages, you should check your power supply unit. It usually says for which voltage its is usable. If for some strange reason it's not usablem you can always buy a new power supply for your laptop. It should cost around 50 Euro. About the printer I'm not sure, as printers are usually not moved around the world like laptops are. Again, check the power intake. It will be written on there. If it's suitable fine, if not, you might want to get a new printer here, because printers are quite cheap. But if you definitely want to bring your printer, you can buy a "voltage converter", it's available in well stocked electronic equipment stores, but it can be quite costly.
5 :
Your laptop shouldn't have a problem once you have a plug adaptor, because most laptops are able to support dual voltages. However you should check your printer before plugging in because if it can't handle the higher voltage you could burn it out (US = 110 volts ; Germany = 220-240 volts). If your printer doesn't have dual voltage then you will need a voltage converter (versus a simple plug adaptor). Plug adaptors are cheap, however transformers are large, clunky and may be expensive and vary depending of low or high wattage. For a comprehensive good guide on using electrical appliances in Germany read: http://www.german-way.com/electric.html Viel Glück.
6 :
Germany 220 volts / 50 Hz AC vs. 110 volts / 60 Hz AC in the US. Check you charger it should say something like "Input 100 - 240 V, 50 - 60 Hz". For the printer the same thing. Buy a converter for your plug (flat-to-round). They are impossible to get in Germany as they sell round-to-flat to the Germans going to the US.
7 :
Modern consumer electronics can usually handle 110-240 Volts, so all you need is a converter for the plug. One more thing on the printer, though: Check that it can actually handle the European type "A4" sheets, getting legal/letter format over here is nigh impossible.
8 :
You need to check on the packages from Laptop/Printer, 110/220. In Germany is 220. I have Laptops and Printers from the US they are 110/220. I'm using Adapter and I can plug it. There is any problems to use them overseas.
9 :
the voltage does not matter.you just have to buy a transformer once you get here...cost like 20 bucks at a thrift store. converts from 220V to 110V..nothing special, maybe a different phone cord but they have these everywhere on the economy for about 4-6 euros..on a military installation they rip you off on these small important things. but yeah bring them it will work here

Probably not. Different radio frequencies in different countries, different protocols.
2 :
Germany uses the same frequencies and protocols like the USA (it's the standardized IEEE 802.11b/g protocol on the 2.4GHz radio frequency). fyi, you have to be near to a hotspot (airports, hotels, cafes, buildings of companies etc) to get a wireless connection. most of them aren't public/free.
3 :
They don't have wireless in Germany. Kidding. The wifi is mostly likely setup not to broadcast it's domain. Have him contact the systmes administrator and request the wireless name and passkey.
4 :
Everyone uses the same frequencies and protocols like the USA (it's the standardized IEEE 802.11b/g protocol on the 2.4GHz radio frequency). If you can find fast food chains, hotel, you can probably get a signal

Sure you can, I travel frequently with two laptops. As long as your carry on bag or laptop bag is within the weight and size limits for your airline there should be no problem. No offense to the above answer, but never check in something like a laptop or any valuables for that matter if you ever want to see them again or at least in one piece. PS. Where you might have a problem is with the customs officials in India, you may have to pay duty unless you can convince the officials your laptops are for personal use and you don't plan on leaving or selling them in India.
