do i have to pay custom charges

do i have to pay custom charges?

Yes, either you or the sender will have to pay for customs
2 :
As you already know taxes and death are the only things certain in life. but there are a few steps you can take to minimize risk of overpaying customs duties. 1) If the items is used, declared a fair market value for it (see ebay for ideas on how much your used laptop is worth) 2) If the computer is broken, the value is lessened even more. Make sure the shipper clearly indicates that the item is broken and coming in for repairs 3) if you left the computer behind while traveling, you can declared it as unaccompanied luggage and declare no value 4) Typically US customs allows you to bring items for personal use without paying taxes- around $500. I hope this helps and good luck

What do I need to take my laptop to Iraq

What do I need to take my laptop to Iraq?
I am going what is called down range, meaning I'm going with the miltary too one of those countries. What do I need to do to be able to take my laptop with me and for me to be able to email my wife who is in Germany?
Other - Computers - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
LOTS OF GAMES YES!!!! but seriously, just make sure you can connect to internet wirelessly and just in case get an extra long ethernet cord just incase no one has wireless =DD oh and a phone cord, iono what they got in iraq
2 :
you'll want a protective case obviously, as it will be in harsh conditions. If you want to email your wife, you'll need a 3G card. Go to a vodafone store or whatever, and ask for a 3g card on their network. Also make sure this network WORKS IN THE CONTRY your going to. You'll be set on a quite expencive pay monthly tarrif. but a 3g card enables you to go onto the internet almost anywhere in the world. A 3G CARD WORKS BY CONNECTING TO A SATTALITE AND GATHERING INFO. It will take a bit longer than the normal wifi speeds, but if you think about it thats amazing. a signal going into outerspace and coming back to you again in this time is incredible. i have one of these 3g cards for work, as i go around the UK alot and need access to the internet.
3 :
There might be times and places where you will have no internet access. To prepare for this you should download a lot of porno before you leave so you'll have something during the down times.
4 :
You will need the basics of electricity and a consistent supply of it. Military bases should not be a problem. You might need either a GSM or satellite connection card. The only way to email is through wireless connection. A 3G card also works well. (Just take an iPhone!) Some of those countries still use Dial up as a primary way to connect to the internet. For the same reason a router or modem will be useless as ethernet does not have a place in the country yet. I have lived in the Middle East before. Sincerely and best of luck.
5 :
Invest in a 3g wireless broadband card. Ask about international coverage before you buy. This is essentially like buying a cell phone for your laptop, which means anywhere you can get a cell phone signal, you will be able to get online. As a tech who is constantly cleaning Iraq out of laptops, I would also invest in a few cans of canned air, to keep your processor fan and cooling fins clean. Don't just blow air through the fan either. Blow it back toward the fan as well from the exhaust side. Do this a few times, back and forth... every few weeks or so. You will occasionally be able to get online where you get stationed, as plenty of Marines from Camp Lejeune here often bring their laptops i for servicing after they get back... and they were online while there. However, make sure you have a good Anti-virus like AVG 8.0 as well as good spyware cleaning tools like Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy. As the guy who ends up cleaning the infections as well as the sand out, the better your protection going over, the less likely you are to bring problems home with you. Also.. be forewarned. Don't be sharing Thumbdrives with others. This is another way that people were passing infections from computer to computer. Also, don't get caught up in the cheap software/DVD craze going on over there. It is relatively well known that a great number of the cheap DVDs are preloaded with spyware/malware/virus infections/rootkits. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/09/AR2008050902548_pf.html Read up. If a deal seems too good to be true, it most likely is

I have a computer that is 6 years old. Time to get another one

I have a computer that is 6 years old. Time to get another one.?
I don't know what to buy but have been thinking about buying up to date cards..but they look like they would cost more alone than a new computer. I am stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Are laptops more powerful? Need advice. Thanks!! Demilspencer at yahoo dot com.
Laptops & Notebooks - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
laptops are more expensive for bang to buck ratio. after 6 years it probably is time for an upgrade laptops are good because they are portable and easily moved around.
2 :
laptops are generally slightly underpowered than desktops but laptops are really comparable these days. if your PC is over 5 years old it's time to upgrade...
3 :
so just update the cards and max out your ram youll be just as happy
4 :
it's probably around the Pentium 3-4 & Athlon Xp era remember age doesn't >>>necessarily<<< relate to performance. How come you want to upgrade;if it suits you fine then why spend money on something you don't need? What exactly is lacking on that machine? please tell me so i can better answer your question. a RAM or hard drive upgrade may fix your issues, it may or may not cost more depends. if it uses DDR RAM (not PC133) then you can get a gig for about 50 USD or a better harddrive more about that much. laptops usually have to sacrifice performance in order to be so portible = this means that if you had a desktop that was $1000 and a laptop that was $1000 the desktop would win by a lot also you can't upgrade some components on a laptop like you can on a desktop (monitor, graphics cards, keyboard) if you want the best bang for your buck get a desktop of you like laptops though then by all means get one if you use your computer for e mail and writing documents and they things like that you should just back up all your data and reinstall your OS and maybe up the RAM a bit and it will be just fine. as a general rule, if it costs more then 200 USD to get the performance you want through upgrades then you should just junk the whole thing and get a new computer hope this helps, e mail me if you have further questions on concerns surgeshamray@yahoo.com
5 :
To your question, "Is it time to get another one?" I'd say, the answer is, only, you need a new one if the one you have, isn't doing all you want, as quickly as you want! Too much these days, folks will try to convince you to get into the fad of having the "latest and greatest"! We all try to consume more...not very cost-effective, in the long run, and if you think about it, not very "earth friendly". (Think of all that hazardous waste of disposed computers!) I have a sort-of new HP and a four-year-old IBM, and they're BOTH workhorses! But, if you NEED a new one, then get a fully new one. A laptop can do anything a desktop can do (IMHO). Get a "souped up" high power laptop whose durability and capabilities far exceed your present needs, and it'll last for years! Cost effective and earth friendly!
6 :
It depends on how much you want to spend and what you going to be using the computer for. If you want something fast and large storage you will be spending a lot. Also, if you do not have enough money to buy the new laptop, you can try refurbish computers they cheaper. Are laptops more powerful? it depends on which laptops some are powerful than others. I like Sony, HP, Toshiba and dell. Again like I said it depends on how much you willing to spend and your needs. Average new laptops that are powerful ranges from $1,000 - $4000. But for refurbish you can get it lot cheaper. Some Desktop new computers are even more cheaper than laptops. thanks http://www.akoagtech.com
7 :
For what you might have to put into it, it might be cheaper to buy a new one.
8 :
Yes i agree with the poster that said that others would try to recommend you a top of the line system that will cost a small fortune but will be an overkill for your needs ^^ I have a 2+ year old computer and i am thinking of upgrading at year 3 hehe. Basically i see 3 catogories of usage: 1) Surfing/Word/Spreadsheet (everyday use) Ave cpu/Low gfx card/80GB hard disk/17" LCD 2) DVD Movies/Music/Lite gaming (multimedia) Ave-Good cpu/Mid gfx card/250GB hard disk/19" LCD 3) Gaming rig (Budget-Uber range) Ave-Good cpu/Mid-Good gfx card/good psu/160GB hard disk/19-22" LCD/possibly cooling hardware I am referring to desktops because they are sturdier, less propriety issues (for DIYs) and i can't enjoy with a smallish laptop screen sorry hehe

There are plug in chargers available for iPods. Usually one comes with it. Charge it up during your layover, most airports will have some plug-in's somewhere for laptop users. Make sure you have travel adapters for the outlets in Germany, though. That's your only possibility. Airliners don't have a place for you to plug in.
2 :
iAirPlay Charger - A portable power adaptor so you can charge your iPod and listen to MP3s during flights. Includes both a 15v airplane power adaptor and a 15v DC (cigarette lighter) power socket adaptor, along with a convenient 3.3ft. (1m) cord.Comes with a locking clip that helps keep the adaptor in place and a jacket and strain relief collar for durability and flexibility. The 24k gold contacts provide for corrosion resistance. $29.95 VersaCharger - A new revolutionary charger that eliminates the need for multiple chargers. Whether you're in the car, on an airplane, at the office, or at home, the VersaCharger is the single charging solution. VersaCharger combines a car charger, wall charger, and airplane charger through an optional converter, to create the all-inclusive charging solution for your Apple iPod. VersaCharger is available for iPod and Mini. $24.95 standard; $33.95 with airplane charger option
3 :
you can't. some airlines have seat adapters for chargers if you're flying first or business class. Ipod battery can probably last up to 10 hours if ur just playing music and ahve your backlight turned off. Don't watch videos or play games or it will die very quickly. You're not going to be listening to music for 13 hours straight are you? Read a book!
4 :
Remember though, that you need to have multiple plugs - not all countries have the same power plugs (and wattage) Eco geek does not a solar one, but I don't know if it will work with non-sunlight. http://www.ecogeekliving.com/universalsolarcharger.html?productid=universalsolarcharger&channelid=FROOG That is one of the problems with ipods vs old fashioned cassette players - you can't replace the batteries! (eta - I always listen while I am doing something else - reading, writing, playing a game.... listening to my ipod doesn't mean it's all I'm doing!)

How much will I have to pay the airport/airline if i bring my pc with me

How much will I have to pay the airport/airline if i bring my pc with me?
I'll be travelling to germany next month and I need my pc for work. I don't have a laptop..:( How much will the airport ask me to pay for bringing my pc. Is it also allowable to bring non-original CDs or installers?
Packing & Preparation - 4 Answers

1 :
Probably nothing, it's free in Phoenix, Tampa and other major airports. Check with security on logging in.
2 :
Best to check with the airline about something that big. International travel does allow for more weight when flying, but that may be taking things a bit far. As to the disks, those are yours - there shouldn't be any issue with those, customs and immigration aren't the copyright police. Why isn't it possible to re-create your work on a PC in Germany, i.e. take the hd out of your current computer and have it installed in a new one there? Or while still at home, have it all put into a laptop to take with - won't your company cover this cost or are you self-employed? Good luck
3 :
For all the hassle, it's probably better to just buy a laptop. You can get a cheap used one on eBay, about $200-$250. It might cost you $100 or more to ship PC in boxes, plus the fact that if it gets damaged by the baggage handlers you'll be SOL. And if it rains, your PC is likely to get wet.
4 :
your PC would have to be shipped in cargo and not likely be treated with kid gloves...I, too, suggest a used laptop. Although, there are many great deals out there on new laptops. The risk of damaging your PC and /or losing your work and programs could be far more costly. And yes, the disc's are yours and no ones business

Can anyone recommend a reliable international voltage converter

Can anyone recommend a reliable international voltage converter?
Greetings, I am traveling from the USA to Germany and a few other nations in western Europe in a few weeks and need some advice on international power plugs / converters. I will have a rather expensive laptop with me, as well as a few smaller items (cell phone charger, camera charger) that I very much want to be protected. It seems simple enough to find the actual adapter plug kits, but I have been having trouble finding a good voltage converter. Suggestions? Thanks!
Other - Europe - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You probably don't need a voltage converer. My camera adaptors and laptop adaptors just plug into the wall and go. Look at the adaptor - if it says something like 100 - 240 V; 50 - 0 Hz, then it will work in both countries with just the plug adaptors. Most modern power supplies for electronics work on both voltage/frequency standards

Anyone stationed in Germany

Anyone stationed in Germany?
My brother just arrived in Germany (Airforce.) He said his cell phone and laptop are not working. If you were/are stationed there, how did you communicate with you family in the states? He put coins in a payphone smart guy! That gets expensive! Alwaysotr7: are you always that mean? I hope that coldness gets you places in life.
Military - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Tell him to go to an internet café, but he managed to let you know about his communication problems, so apparently, he can communicate
2 :
It depends on the type of cell phone he has. Most likely, his best bet is to just buy a new one. I recommend him to get a pre-paid phone (D1, D2, etc) because the contract phones can be a hassle if/when he deploys and they are a pain to cancel. His laptop will work fine. He may need a European outlet adapter, but nothing more. If he is stationed at Ramstein, he could go to the PAX terminal and use the free wi-fi there to keep in contact. I don't know if other AFBs provide the same service. For simple communication, his absolute best, most cost-effective choice is to just get a regular landline. It will cost more up front, but international calls cost pennies. Literally. The AT&T phone cards are a rip off (spend $20, talk for 18 minutes.) In contrast, an average 18 minute call to the US will cost less than $0.60 on a landline. And if he does not want a landline, he can always go with DSL and use Skype, Vonage, or Yahoo Voice. DSL service in Germany generally puts the service in the US to shame. It costs a little more (usually around $70 at the current exchange rate). He has options. Just make sure he doesn't try them all. He will be out serious money.
3 :
He can easily establish a home phone and get on an unlimited calling plan back to the states through Deutschetelecom. And that will also give him the option of having internet. I lived in the dorms and it wasnt to expensive to get a phone and internet when I was in Germany. Off base he can get the same setup. There is no reason for him to have issues contacting home.
4 :
Tell him to get a German cell phone. The American ones do not work because they have a different network there. He can also get a German internet provider so he can email from his laptop.
5 :
Maybe he doesn't want to talk to you, because it should be no problem if on a military base

LOVE your question! definitely the intel i7, any brand would do, but i would recommend apple or sony vaio for the battery life. about the OS.. windows 7 ultimate is great and you have more freedom over the hardware(processors, coolers, graphic cards) and stuff like that. while mac os x binds you to the products of apple, I myself would go with the win 7 ultimate just because of the hardware freedom, but the last one is definitely up to you and it doesn't affect the performance of the software.
5 :
i7 is best; don't focus on brand; Windows 7 is definitely more compatible with the the programs you will be running for graphic design. Also, try this laptop recommender: http://laptoprec.com

Can I play a PAL DVD in my Dell studio laptop

Can I play a PAL DVD in my Dell studio laptop?
I have a Dell studio 1558 laptop and I want to buy an all regions PAL DVD from germany. I need to know if my laptop will play the DVD at all.
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
That depends. If your laptop was purchased in the UK or other PAL supporting countries, then yes. If your laptop was purchased in America, then no, it's NTSC...
2 :
Actually they are not as bothered by people purchasing movies from overseas as they used to be. This is one of the great things about DVDs. With VHS tape, you not only had to have a PAL compatable player, but also a PAL compatable TV. Not anymore. A region free/code changed DVD player will do all of that for viewing on NTSC TVs. Most computer DVD players are now region free, especially laptops, since people take them with on travels. It would depend more on the brand and how it was purchased. Many bought directly from the manufacturer are not region free, but bought in a store, generally are. I purchased my laptop in a store and the player is region free. A friend bought the same model through the manufacturer, it is not region free. The best way to find out is to look at your users manual/specification or even contact Dell. There are also many home players that can be purchased "region free" or players that can be purchased and easily changed to a specific region or "region free". How I figured it out was I found a player that was within my price range, and typed the brand/model number into a search followed by "hack" (Phillips ABC1234 hack). This brought up several pages that gave easy directions to change the region codes. I would recommend only one that the code can be changed by using the remote. There are some that require the change be made by downloading an update, dropping it on a DVD and inserting the DVD. If you mess this process up, you end up with a new paperweight. You may think that looking at DVD players and then searching if they are changeable is tedious, but trust me, you will most likely get a hit with in a couple of tries

4 :
You can definately take it on board with you, I've done it on mulitple occassions
5 :
Yes you can. You are allowed to use it 10 mins after take-off up until 10 min beofre landing. In security, you'll have to take the laptop out of the bag for scanning.
6 :
you can bring it on, just you cant have it on during take off and landing. and there might not be a way to recharge it on the plane some airlines now have plugs but most dont.
7 :
yes you should be able to. Business people do it all the time!
8 :
I just went on a flight about 2 weeks ago and I was allowed to bring my laptop. You just have to take it out of the case....that was only across the country, though. I'm not sure if it will be any different going through other countries..you can probably just check with the airline !
9 :
I brought mine with me to SFO and through customs they took it away for a checkup, and were a bit annoyed that I didn't tell them I had a laptop in the first place. My dad told me to always keep your laptop with you, dont put it in your luggage and check it in (you never know if they throw the luggage--with clothes it doesnt matter. also you never know if it will get lost or not--my friend's dad lost a suitcase on a buisness trip) However you can't use it during the flight, obviously. But it's important to keep a laptop safe! ^^ hope it helps! ^^
10 :
You can absolutely bring your laptop with you. And Lufthansa is a great airlines by the way. Bring your lap top in a seperate like lap top case though, and remember when going through security you will have to remove it from the bag. Other than that yea you can so bring it and like jam out watch movies play games or do work... do whatever you want with it... just make sure Wi-Fi is turned off... Enjoy Germany by the way..... Country is soooo beautiful..
11 :
I dont see why not.
12 :
Of cause you r allowed to take it with you
13 :
No you can take it on board.
14 :
you can bring it on with you but you can't surf the net just play games & such
15 :
Not only can you take it on the plane, airlines request (and some are beginning to require) that you take it with you as checked luggage. Their logic, which makes sense to me, is that in the rare event your laptop's battery shorts and starts a fire, it is much more easily noticed and extinguished if it is in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you than down below in the cargo hold

If you bring up your internet/network connections..you should see the connection to your "internet stick" there. If you hardwire from the laptop to the ps3, you'll also a "Local Area Network" connection. Just shift-click both the connections and bridge them. That's assuming you're using windows. There may even be an easier way. That's just what I did once

I will be going to Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria over spring break. Would it be wise to bring my laptop? I have heard that they might make me take it apart to check for bombs (oh no!) and that the internet could be taking hours to get onto. But, I would like to be able to reach my family on an affordable rate i.e. not $1.00 a minute.

As long as your laptop is functioning properly you will have no problems. They do not make you take it apart and the most they do is ask you to turn it on to insure it is functioning and some airlines make you remove the batteries while in flight. Having your laptop to record a journal of your travels is a great thing to have along.
2 :
I was in Germany & Switzerland a couple months ago and had no problems taking a laptop. They did examine it and put it through the x-ray machine every time I was in an airport, but they didn't take it apart or do anything that would damage it. Have fun on your trip

Maybe you should try turning it on there suppose to be something that pops up on the top of your screen that says Video web camera click that and then click the tool which is settings and look in that and see if your settings is ok then click it again and click start camera if it doesn't come on then click the question mark. Hope i helped. Or you can Click the webcam icon on the conversation if you dont see it ,open messenger and click options where your sign in name is then you will see a box come up saying Personal layout sign in messeges etc On that same page make sure something is ticked that says allow others to see that i have a webcam

What to do when taking a laptop abroad

What to do when taking a laptop abroad?
I'm traveling to Germany to study abroad and I'm concerned about powering my laptop. I don't know whether I need to purchase a converter or if just a plug adapter would work. If you have any suggestions/advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers

1 :
Yeah, your going to need a converter. You should be able to get on at your computer's manufacturer's website. If not just do a search for laptop power converter.
2 :
you might contact the place you are staying at, and let them know you will need to use a converter to power up you US laptop, they probably can assist. They may have one for you to use. I was stationed in Germany while in the air force and we had them . most of use bought them from someone who was leaving and returning to the states.
3 :
What you should do is find a replacement power cable that works in Germany. Contact the laptop's manufacturer to find out how to obtain one (they'll probably sell you one). You do not want to use a power converter because those often churn out very "dirty" power. Especially the cheap ones. What you would be doing is taking one frequency of AC power and converting it to a different AC frequency, then you'd be converting that to DC. You should just skip the "middle man" (the American(?) AC power) and go directly from German AC to DC. If you cannot get a European power cord from the manufacturer, then invest in a UPS (uninterpretable power supply). You can then plug your laptop into that and then plug that into a power converter. The UPS will clean the power provided from the converter and give you good old American AC power out the other end. It's not an ideal solution, but it's far less likely to mess up your laptop

I am from india and i have a laptop, i want to buy one more in germany, can i carry these back without duty?

Air Travel - 3 Answers

1 :
Legally, you have to declare everything you buy abroad and bring back. Of course, no one does. So, it is up to you. If you get caught, I am sure that the duty will be higher than if you declared up front.
2 :
If you bring it in a Carry Case and say it is used, no Customs Duty is payable. If you bring it in its original carton with thermocole packing, then may be you have to pay a small amount as Customs Duty. The worst thing about buying gadgets abroad is you don't get good after-sales-service. Almost all brands of laptops are sold in India at competitive rates.
3 :
You can easily get away with doing so. I've traveled internationally with up to three laptops without a problem other than a sore shoulder. I've even carried a desktop workstation in the form of a shuttlebox into Brazil once, I tried to declare it but they asked me if it would leave the country which of course it would eventually so I said yes, they tore up my declaration, brought out a blank one, had me sign it and I was on my way. A taxi driver in Rio suggested that I bring laptops for him to sell on my trips. It was very tempting as one laptop could subsidize a personal trip quite effectively. The importation tax on technological goods is 95% in that country. That same taxi driver offered to set me up with young college girls in need of tuition money, obviously that would negate the subsidy very quickly. Note this was after about ten trips to Rio so it isn't like a shady driver from the airport but it was one of the black town cars at the hotel. I have no doubt that he was serious about the possible arrangements. Of course, I never did it, mostly because my work in Rio was wrapping up. I wonder if I would've tried it just once... hmmmm... college girls.

Laptop battery problem, idk? I came to germany

Laptop battery problem, idk? I came to germany?
i came to germany, charged my computer without a converter. then i thought surely, my battery was fried. so i got a new battery, and now it turns out thats not the problem. what is it then?? well, i turn the laptop on, it sounds great. like its running and everything...but the screen just stays black...
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Batteries are batteries no matter where you go. Having plugged in your laptop without the converter damaged the computer itself, not the battery. If it's like what happened to me once, just the screen burned out but the comp still runs fine. If that applies to you, it's an easy fix at any computer store, although it's possible there's more damage than just the screen (the part you're looking at is the screen inverter cable). Just FYI, I've had a laptop repaired for the screen like 3 times, and each time for like a month it would work great but then would mess up again. So, idk if you want to waste with repairs like that since the damage is possibly throughout the motherboard.
2 :
Most laptop AC adapters can handle both European and American voltages without a converter. They're built for travel. So I don't think charging it in Germany is the source of your problem. What are the symptoms? There's no clue in your question.
3 :
What could have happened is the voltage was different than that of the US and it short circuited the laptop. Try to remove the battery, USBs, and charger from the laptop and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then try again. If that doesn't work then it could be an internal issue. I would suggest you take it to a local computer repair store to have them look at it. Good luck

Ok i am probably going to buy a sony vaio laptop the fz series...I like everything it has but i live in germany because of military and we over here have 220w power know i thought right away that it has dual voltage (that it works on both powers) ... but just wanted to ask again would be shitty if you buy it and dont have no power^^....plsss some1 help

ask the supplier.......you risk getting a wrong answer here!!
2 :
call sony
3 :
First check with Sony directly to see if it will work. My sister lives in Germany (by choice, not military) and purchases her laptops in the US (Dell) and uses them in Germany with no problems. Of couse she uses a converter
4 :
depends on if your laptop has a battery
5 :
It will be in the spec, but most Sony are dual voltage (as in 110 up to 250) - its voltage, not 'w' as you note that is important. Otherwise, but it in Germany?
6 :
Laptop works with its own voltage .. sourced from its battery. The power cord and adaptor works between 100 to 240 volts. So you would not have any problems there. I use HP/Presario that was bought in the US. But the power plug may not be suitable for your use, so you may have to get a power plug adaptor.
7 :
The Sony Viao will come with a power brick that should support 110-240v input (which means it will support and convert european voltage), however, you will need a plug adapter. To be on the safe side, you might want an adapter that converts voltage because I can't promise that the laptop will come with a brick that supports 220v. These will be about $20 more though.
8 :
If it was a desktop then it should have dual voltage, but I have never seen a laptop with dual voltage... Odds are you can order a charger for the laptop in both 220 and 110Volt Aside from having two chargers you can also buy 110v to 220v adaptors
9 :
special focus on laptops just in http://www.laptopeoples.blogspot.com
10 :
I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot

I have a Macbook 2008 and I want to bring my laptop with me to Germany (From Canada) but I'm not sure if I need a converter. I heard that the Apple power brick (Magsafe) has one already built in but I will still need an adapter.

You'll need either the Apple World Travel Kit plug for continental Europe or any standard plug converter for the 3-prong US to continental Europe plug. The PSU takes care of the 120/240 conversion. You only need the plug

I'm going to Germany soon, and I'm bringing my cell phone...what do I need to buy so I can recharge and use it

I'm going to Germany soon, and I'm bringing my cell phone...what do I need to buy so I can recharge and use it
So, soon I am going to Germany. I live in the U.S. and I'm bringing my Laptop computer and cell phone with me. I need to be able to use them so what do I need to buy so I can recharge them since Germany doesn't have the same electrical outlets as in the U.S. I know I need an adaptor or something, but where would I get it and what kind do I need? My phone does have an SIM card.
Frankfurt - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
First of all you cell-phone has to be a GSM-Phone. (with a SIM-Card in it) Otherwise you cant use it in europe. It is the easiest way to charge your phone here to buy a european charger for your phone.
2 :
You need to buy a converter, Europe uses 50 Hz and 220 V, which is different from the US which has 110 V. It is not just having different plugs, it is having different voltage too! If you try to plug in without a converter, your laptop and phone will be fit for the trash can afterwards. Best ask in a good electronics store in the US. And from lots of websites with travel supplies you can order this converter online.
3 :
for electric power you need to buy an so called Euro-converter (with a Euro plug) changes from 110 AC to 220 DC. and for your cellephone, if you have an adapter to plug into a charger, the charger can go into the same converter, thats it. look for a cheap provider for the cellar phone, to many in germany. T-Mobile,E-Plus,Vodafone are o.K. I heard that O2 is expansive.
4 :
Recharging a prepaid phone (in terms of money) is tricky, but if your cellphone is contract-free, you can easily buy another SIM with a German number everywhere for about ten Euros. Just make sure that your cellphone supports the European GSM frequencies; if it's a "quadband", as most modern phones are, it will for sure. If it's a "U.S. only" brand, it probably won't. As has already been mentioned, for all electrical devices, you'll need a voltage adaptor, as Europe uses 220/240 Volts as the standard current on wall outlets, while the U.S. have 110/120. --- @OP: The German access procider will not be interested in whether your phone has a SIM or not; they'll rather be interested if it's THEIR SIM or not. I'm sure your phone has a SIM, because every phone has.
5 :
Look at your appliances FIRST. If your computer, for example, can run off of 110-240V (it will say that somewhere, usually on the bottom), you don't need a converter, just a plug adapter. My grungy old laptop worked everywhere in Europe, and all I needed for it was a standard European plug adapter. European plugs--with the exception of Britain and Ireland--are round, two-pronged plugs that sometimes have a hole for ground (older European wall outlets sometimes have a ground sticking out of the wall that fits into a corresponding hole on the plug, in an odd reversal from what we're used to in the U.S.) If your computer will NOT run on dual-voltage, then yes... you'll need a converter. Converters are generally expensive and heavy, so be sure you really need one before you get one. I'd also recommending getting a few American-to-European plug adapters, instead of just one, if possible. Most travel stores and even airports will sell them; I find that they're sometimes cheaper in Europe, actually, but it's up to you where and when you buy them. Now, as for the phone; the phone will work 1.) if it's GSM and has a sim card, and 2.) if your phone is tri-band at least, if not quad-band. GSM phones in the US (and not all phones in the US are GSM/sim card anymore) operate at the 1900 mHz frequency; whereas European countries are on either 800mHz or 1800mHz (unless those frequencies have changed since I last looked). That's where the term "tri-band" comes from. Check and see if your wall adapter for your phone is dual-voltage (if it says 110-240V or 110-220V). If so, you only need a wall adapter, not a converter, as I said before. If not, see if the manufacturer has a wall adapter for your phone model that IS dual-voltage. Also, bear in mind that you can go to any electonics store in Germany, like MediaMarkt, and just buy a cheap prepaid cellphone (a cellphone is called a "handy" in Germany) and buy 10 Euro, 20 Euro, 30 Euro, etc. phone cards for it. T-Mobile (D1), Vodafone, and O2 are the primary carriers in Germany. Bear in mind that cell phone plans (prepaid or normal) in Germany or anywhere else in Europe tend to be much more expensive than in the U.S.; and that all incoming calls are free, and calls to other cellphones are cheaper than calls to any landline. If you need to know more, I'd be happy to answer further within the realm of my own experience.
6 :
You can generally get a SIMM card when you get to the airport or can go to any Phone shop. They refer to them as Handi's there not cell phones for verbal accuracy. Airports rent them and if you have your own that uses a SIMM you can buy a SIMM pre paid I believe and you use that in your phone. OUR simms from the USA usually do not allow us to call back unless you are using T-Mobile. They are the only company in the US that allows you to use your Cell/Handi as is without any changes to it. Why?? Because they are a German based company!! for charging you can go to Radio Shack or similar and get the conversion for it there or if it is a phone in stock over there then buy the German version of it and charge it direct. it works most time with laptops. No converters needed, just the change of plugs. They use DC voltage and us AC voltage. have fun. Have fun.
7 :
make sure that whatever it is that you want to bring to germany, 110 220 volt compatible on the batteries that they have.if not then you need a transformer, so that neither of them blow up. and depending on the cell phone you want to bring, it may not work. has to be GMS with a sims card, you will have to buy a sims card for europe anyways

Can i bring my laptop to another country

Can i bring my laptop to another country?
Im going to germany this summer, should i bring my laptop with? i have a wireless card, would that work? and what about charging it?
Laptops & Notebooks - 5 Answers

1 :
WIFI is a standard, it works anywhere. Most computers (especially laptops) automatically convert voltage. You just need to get a thing that adapts the plug physically to another shape. Best Buy and Target etc sell these in the US. eBay as well.
2 :
Germany MIGHT have a different electrical socket to plug things in with..Most likely though, you can buy a converter. You just have to find out what they have available. If you wireless card is like a carrier card-like at&t-it won't work unless they have att coverage there.
3 :
yes you can definitely take ur laptop anywhere u go...i myself bought mine in a different country...the wireless card will work as it detects the nearest wifi network n connects....as to charging, u can either take an adapter, or just show ur plug to any electrical hardware store in germany, n they'll give u a suitable adapter...no problem...its universal
4 :
The 802.11 series wifi is international standard. A broadband, wireless card (Verizon, ATT, or other carrier) will likely charge you astronomical rates for 'out of range' or roaming fees (it uses cell phone technology), so look into this BEFORE you leave. If you can't get a straight answer from them, make sure to turn off 'data roaming' to prevent invoice shock. Notes on using a public 'hotspot' (for "wifi") If you're using Windows to configure your Wifi, go to Control Panel> Wireless Network Connections> Wireless Networks tab; here you'll need to identify all wifi networks your system 'sees' in any given berg, then for the preferred network, highlight it, then 'move up' to the top of the list & uncheck 'Automatically connect to non-preferred networks'>close> OK Under 'Advanced' button, tick 'access points only'. Using Public 'Hotspots' can be trouble if you don't use extra precautions. Because 'open' networks have no encryption between your unit and the router, everything you send or receive is in plain text. Meaning that a hacker, with a commonly available application, can intercept and log all of your traffic 'packets'; and with commonly available software, can run "brute force" programs that crack passwords, or spoof your Mac address and become a 'man in the middle' & get traffic meant for you. So the best advice is: do not visit sites that are private, or require 'log-in', or credit cards, banks, etc. The only secure method to use, over a 'hotspot' is a VPN, or SSL website.
5 :
You can take your laptop to germany along with you but i don't know about wireless card that it works there or not may be yes or may be know depends upon which brand connection you are using

They have TV. Not sure on the wireless You can plug in the phone and laptop...........they will melt.........but you can do that. You will need a transformer
2 :
TV & internet service is readily available. As for plugging in your gear, check the power adapters to see if they are multi-voltage (110v-220v, 50-60mHz). If they are multi-voltage, you can plug them in without a transformer, only using a plug adapter. If they are only 110v, you will need a power transformer (check the thrift shop for better deals). If you need a TV, look for one that is multi-voltage and multi-system ( you can watch European TV then)

You will have to go through customs. Don't wrap the gift, and explain that everything else is for your personal use. They are used to people having dvd players for long flights, and laptops.
2 :
Of course you will have to go through customs....and yes you will have to show all of your items....you should be fine though...
3 :
Depends where you are travelling from. If you are travelling from outside of Europe and Germany is your place of arrival then you will have to state if you have anything to declare. They are mainly interested in things like weapons, drugs, anything that is illegal or a risk to their country. If you arrive from another European country then (in my experiences) you can just go through, you don't get your passport stamped

it depends. the hospitals i know have none, and it's certainly not allowed in the IC unit... but you should ask.

Hello: Whether a German Hospital has accessible WiFi or not, may depend on the hospital. If you know the name of the hospital your friend is in, call their information desk. Whether or not patients are allowed to use their own wireless devices (as an inpatient) would depend on 1) hospital policy 2) the patient's condition (if your friend is in the ICU, then the answer would most likely be a "no") and/or 3) if your friend brought a 3g phone or laptop with them when they checked in. Hope this helps

What on earth is going on in Germany? I have been looking for a laptop with English Windows but found nothing

What on earth is going on in Germany? I have been looking for a laptop with English Windows but found nothing?
I am looking for sony Viao but when I go to its website SONY.DE but there is no way to send them any qustion or e-mail to ask if it is possible to give me a Laptop with German Keyboard but English Windows. I contacted some Sony retailers in Germany but they haven't ever heard any offer like this. Why? Isn't there any foreigner in Germany? Is it unusual to order a laptop in this country with a windows with international language? Do I expect too much or there is something else going on in this country?

It's probably not a conspiracy. It might just not be a common thing to look for.

Most Windows operating systems have the option to change the language. What are the first steps to setting up a laptop with wifi

What are the first steps to setting up a laptop with wifi?
I have a friend in Germany who bought a new Sony laptop that is wifi capable. What does he have to do to configure it for wifi, step by step? When he tries logging on to the internet he gets a message that it cannot detect a connection, even though he is right next to a router.

Here's a video that walks you through it step by step: http://www.sutree.com/how-to/10375/video-tutorial---How-to-Set-Up-a-Wi-Fi-Network
2 :
go into network connections and make sure wifi is enabled and the others connection types are disabled, then reboot. Also alot of systems have an on /off button for wifi as a safty precaution, make sure it is on.
3 :
well first you need a wireless router then the computer itself needs to have a wireless network card. and if your running windows vista there will be a little text box that pops up in the lower right corner that says wireless networks are available. then click on that and scroll through the list until you see your network and if its pass code protected then just input the pass code and you should be fine. and if that doesn't work then either your computer doesn't have a wireless net work card or its been turned off. to turn it back on there should be a little symbol in the bottom right corner that looks like two computer monitors click on that and it should have a choice to diagnose problem and that should give you the option to turn the wireless network card back on if its off

How to connect to the net in Germany from my laptop

How to connect to the net in Germany from my laptop?
A couple of years ago I went to Berlin, DE to visit my mom. She has wireless internet in her home and her laptop connects just fine. I have a Toshiba Portege that I purchased for the US and when I took it with me to Berlin, I could not connect to the net. I tried other hot spots and my moms office, and it just would not pick up a signal or register any IP addresses. Is there a trick involved here? I am planning on traveling again and need to know how to enable my laptop to connect to the net outside of the US. Any suggestions? Shouldn't I just enable the WiFi switch and be able to see available networks and connect to them thereafter? What would cause my computer to not register the IP address and not pick up a signal?

No trick. There should be SOME wifi signals in the range of channels 1 to 11 (Europe allows channels 1-13, but your laptop will only use 1-11). If you don't see any wifi signals, either it's a conspiracy and everyone is using channel 12 or 13, or you're doing something wrong
