If i am sending a new laptop to my brother in germany

If i am sending a new laptop to my brother in germany ?? ?
I have heard he gona have to pay tax when he will receive that Germany in CLAUSTHAL ZELLERFELD, But what if i am sending him from UK with all the tax and VAT paid ....

1 :
You have to pay tax, if it is foreign trade --- not if you send a package from one to the other. But be careful!!! There are exceptions Canary Islands for example but also in the UK Chanel Islands and Man for example.
2 :
It has nothing to do with postage or stuff, it is simply the customs. There is a sales tax in the UK, and one in Germany. I have no idea how high it is in the UK, but it is 19% in Germany. So that is why he will have to pay tax when he gets it, because the German states' viewpoint is that whoever ships something into Germany to use it there is cheating the German state of the sales tax they would get if the person in Germany would buy the stuff in Germany. I would recommend to send it as a gift, but than again, a laptop is kind of heavy, and they tend to open up the heavy stuff to check inside. Besides, they will probably just open it becasue of a routine scan or whatever,a nd than... Is he coming over for Christmas or something? If so, let him take it with him when he goes back, and avoid all the hazzle of customs.
3 :
You usually have to pay taxes and VAT for whatever personal goods and gifts above 30 Euros you send. With one exception: ... if you send it from withing EU, then there are no taxes, because we have a free market and goods for personal use sent between EU countries are treated as if they come from within Germany. As UK belongs to EU, there won't be any customs, duties or taxes to pay

How much does internet on Lufthansa cost?
In two weeks I am heading to Germany. I have my laptop, and I'd like to use internet. I know they have it with Boeing Connexions. (I actually heard a rumor they took it out, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Anyways, I can't seem to find anything about the price of the internet. I would like to know, and also maybe see if I can buyy it before I go.

As long as there is internet access you can connect no problem. No special application needed. If in the place you will be going the wifi access is free then you can chat your family for free but if not then you need to pay for you to connect to the net...goodluck...jexter@eastern.com.ph

My HP Vista-based laptop had the Canadian setup of English or French. I was told that once the choice is made, you CANNOT go back.
2 :
Depends on which version of Vista u have, cuz the ultimate version, u can download the language packages using Windows Update, and actually be able to change the language of ur whole computer. if not, u can upgrade anytime, but u have to pay... (most laptops have Windows Home Premium preinstalled, and u should be able to upgrade anytime to a higher version... (this upgrade does not erase anything, or affect ur personal files...)

there are a few programs that can convert your xp into any language, just search the net for Language Packs... the problem is that they don't always fit... sometimes they give conflicts cause the majority of them is actualy changing the kernel of you windows. my advice ... reinstall xp from an english version kit... good luck
2 :
If you have a English version of XP that just save your data and format it. If there is any way in coverting i wouldn't recommend it to you. Formatting and then installing o fresh copy on English version XP is the best way for my oppinion.
3 :
start > control panel > regional and language options change the language settings in all the tabs in this window to english, and change the location setting to US. I do not know if it will change the german XP to english, but you will certainly be able to write english language in your email, wordpad etc.
4 :
most of the keys on your new comp. will be caaeptable in the U.S. but the only surefire way to get it operating the way you wish is to format the entire comp and re-start in the language of choice

I need help playing a DVD from Germany on my laptop

I need help playing a DVD from Germany on my laptop?
So, I shipped movies here from Germany's Amazon in order to practice German. First, YES I DO know the region issues. I have not downloaded any decoding software because my computer allowed me to play them since it was my first time switching regions. However, I put in the Sound of Music and I started having problems. It plays fine until about the 16th or 17th chapter, then it freezes up (no matter what player I am using even the express media player which doesnt require the computer to be turned on all of the way). Sometimes it will then skip to the 32nd chapter. Is there any way I can change settings or download something to my computer?

i'm not familiar with courier companies but i'm sure most of them are pretty much the same. but it would only be in bad condition when it gets to you if you don't prepare it properly in the first place. before you send it for shipment, make sure you wrap it snuggly in bubble wrap. double the wrap if you want to. that way it will be protected from bumps. a well known company like UPS & DHL will be a better choice. good luck

Problem using three laptops to wi-fi router.

Problem using three laptops to wi-fi router...?
I just received and connected a new wi-fi router (Vodafone Easybox 602 - I'm in Germany) so our family can use three latops. I can successfully connect and use any of the three laptops, but once another laptop connects it disconnects the first. So, not all three can connect at the 'same time.' -- Customer service is in German which I can barely understand. Any suggestions?? I'm not a techie, but fairly good with good instructions.
Computer Networking - 5 Answers

1 :
you either check the security options, or you can connect the other laptops with a wired ETHERNET Cable, idk if you'd want that, but thats all i can say. :)
2 :
use a wire to connect to router and use it or go return the one and buy a new one sorry if i'm no help because i'm from USA and i don't have acsess to that type of router if i did i would help you no matter what ^_^ P.S.I'm a tech guy
3 :
Found one on E-Bay everthing was in German but got the jest of what it is it may be for one computer only.
4 :
It may be a wifi access point, not a router. It sounds like you get only one IP address at a time, suggesting you are getting the public IP your ISP assigns to you. With a proper router, it will act as a gateway between 3 computers and the one public IP from the ISP. The router will assign 3 different local (LAN) IP addresses, and share the public IP with all 3 PCs. What is happening is that the last PC to connect is getting the IP, disconnecting the previous owner. That's because the ISP only give one IP per service. If there is no ethernet port on your ISP modem, you may be out of luck. You could get a wireless "client" box to connect to the wireless device from the ISP, and then feed that via wire to a new router, one that has wireless and wired. A lot depends on what kind of "client" boxes will access your ISP's modem. (G or N mode, etc...)
5 :
Hard to imagine that a wifi router only lets one device on at a time. I assume this is the usual type with four wired connections and a wifi antenna. I assume you have tried all three wired and that works but the wifi does not? If the user guide instructions are in German and you find a web or pdf version go to Google, then Language Tools and from the pdf cut and paste into the box and ask it to translate from German to English. May have to get a German friend to help with this, however, in the web config page, once you figure how to get there, there is a setting for how many addresses the router can provide. The default may be one so you have to up that to perhaps 5

Where do I find instructions in English for getting online with T-Com in Germany

Where do I find instructions in English for getting online with T-Com in Germany?
Everything I find is in German and I can't read German. I can't figure out how to get online at home. I have my modem and the green lights for "power" "DSL" and "LAN" are on. No green light for "Online". I follow through the screens in German to enter all my info but then when I press "Internet verbinden" (I think...) I still can't get onto websites. The orange light where I plug the CAT5 cable into my laptop is flashing like it does when I am online. How do I get online or where can I find answers to this problem in English?

I had the same problem. You may use laptops, however, during takeoff and landing you may not. Only once you reach your cruising altitude you can. That's about the first 30 minutets after takeoff, and the last 30 minutes before landing that you're not allowed.
2 :
Yes, and you can use it in-flight too. Have a great trip!
3 :
Sure they are. I don't know of any airline that doesn't allow laptops to be brought onto the plane. Just keep it handy at the security checkpoint, you'll need to remove it from your suitcase or laptop bag and place it in a tray for screening. Lufthansa is one of the few airlines that offers wifi on some transatlantic flights, for a price of course. You may be able to connect to the internet if Lufthansa is on schedule with their installation of wifi onboard their planes. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/business/global/13air.html

If you are coming from the states, the only thing you will need is a converter from the plug ins we have to the plug ins they have (the prongs are shaped differently--in Germany, they are round). The power chord will automatically convert the 220 to 110 for your computer.

Right now I'm a exchange student living in Germany and all you need is a european conventer plug. They sell then in deparment stores like target, k-mart,ect. It cost $20. They sell a package with all the international adaptors. You just need the one for Europe. Is a round one. Ask for it in one of this stores!Hope it helps and enjoy Germany is beautiful! You'll be fine. Most laptop power adapters are designed to work anywhere. Your U.S. plug won't fit in a German socket, though. You'll need either a plug adapter, or a German-style A/C cord. Take a close look at your power brick. The cord that goes into the wall outlet can be unplugged at the power brick side. That's why. You can unplug the U.S. cord, and plug in a German cord. Probably easier to find the German cord when you get to Germany

I mean reliable--as in continued, uninterrupted connection. I'm planning a trip to Germany and need to know the availability of Wi-fi hotspots and DSL in Germany and which is more reliable. I couldn't find anything on line. I also would like to know if its compatibile with a laptop that has a US based wifi-card. Any information would be much appreciated. No not really: Example cost with Germany biggest provider: http://www.t-mobile.de/hotspot/preise/0,9647,13950-_,00.html T-Online also exist in the states inquire for roaming conditions and technology. US based wifi-card ? European bands? No idea. Info seems available in Internet. Spot Finder NB-7300p has a frequency range from 2400~2483 Spot Finder NB-7300p hat einen Frequenzbereich von 2400~2483 ... You will find info but You have to Google German words. You would google: hot spot Kosten (hot spot cost) or Tarife Frequenz = frequency - the technical terms are spelled differently but basically the same. zuverläßig = reliable

You can make older games work by doing a couple of things. You can use DosBox for older DOS games. For games like Diablo 2, I would install XP in a virtual machine using virtualbox with guest additions. Then you can run all the old XP games on the virtual machine. How can I offer an item on eBay US and eBay Germany at the same time?
Hello. I got a very expensive vaio laptop, which I am about to sell. As I am German, living in Germany I'd like to offer my laptop in eBay Germany of course. But I have traveled the world and I got that vaio from the United States, so it has got a QWERTY keyboard. The German laptops are very different from the English ones. Keybard is different, the software language, you name it. So I'd like to offer my laptop mainly to the US, but as I am living in Germany I want the laptop to appear in eBay Germany as well. Mainly also because the USD is so poor at the moment, I'd just make losses in comparison to the strong EUR. Thank you for the answers.

Traveling to Europe (Italy,Swistzerland, Spain, Germany and France) using laptop necessary gear to plug

Traveling to Europe (Italy,Swistzerland, Spain, Germany and France) using laptop necessary gear to plug?
I have an xpsm1210 from dell and need to know what do I need to plug it to the 230V@50Hz electric service in Europe
Other - Europe - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The power supply that comes with the laptop should accept 230 V@50 Hz as well as US voltage/current, so you do not need a voltage converter. You can check the label on the power supply to verify this. You will only need the plug adapter that converts from the US style two flat prongs to the European two round prongs for the countries you've listed. I've used my laptops in all of these countries with no problems. If you go to the UK, you will need a different plug adapter - they're widely available and relatively inexpensive.
2 :
All AC adapters for dell XPS notebooks have a multiple power input from 100-240 volts. You just need a plug adapter to fit it in the wall outlet (type C of attached link) which is commonly used in continental europe for appliances not requiring grounding.
3 :
just need a plug to fit European outlets. That little box on the cable converts it all, you don't need a special adapter

I have a lot fo friends who live in Germany and order DVDs and the such from Amazon.com. I just did a quick search there and they sell DVD burners. So that may also be a viable option for you. I believe they ship globally

Cost of Parceling (Laptop) from Germany to Delhi,India

Cost of Parceling (Laptop) from Germany to Delhi,India?
I have a personal package to be delivered from KOELN,DE to New Delhi,India. The package contains a Laptop. The dimensions are as follows : 36cm x 34cm x 8cm The weight of the package is : 3.2 kgs The price of the item contained in the package is 1497 €. I have been to a local DHL outlet in Germany and had asked the cost of the delivery, and it was around 63 €. But I wasn't given any information about the duty tax and other price details. Since it is a personal package, will I be charged duty taxes ? If so, then how much? And How exactly will I be paying for the Duty taxes? Will it be charged on the sender or the receiver? Will it be a one time payment, "63 € + Extra Charges(Duty Tax)" for the sender? Also will it be helpful if it is sent as a Gift ? Need a detailed information as to how this works.

If you bought the laptop in Germany you already paid taxes. Germany does not charge any exit duty if there is any duty to pay that will be entry duty in India. Usually the customs have to be paid be the person who is receiving the package and can not be paid in advance.
2 :
If you export the lap you can ask for return of German taxes

well you can try to download the program joost. with this you can watch tv shows, but in my opinion the selection isnt that great. Also hulu.com has alot of american tv shows, but you may need an ip address from america... ...which you can get by signing up for a secure vpn. this secures your internet anonymity by giving you another ip address. you can choose an american ip address and the websites you go to will think you are in america

You will need an adapter for the power plug. The Voltage is different in Germany than in the US. US = 110V, Germany = 220V. But almost all power supplies of notebooks support both. So only the adapter for the plug is needed.
2 :
All you might need is a travel adapter to plug it in but it'll work fine apart from that.
3 :
You'll need a converter for your power supply. Alternatively, you can buy a new cable at any computer shop (media markt or so)
4 :
Their power sockets might be different. When you get to the airport, there are stores that sell power plug adapters

I want to buy a laptop from a germany online store, is there any tax/custom if the delivery address in UK

I want to buy a laptop from a germany online store, is there any tax/custom if the delivery address in UK?

I think so, but I'm not sure. Look around online.
2 :
You must pay VAT in Germany, but this is included in the price you are quoted by the supplier. You do not then pay any VAT in the UK. The UK does not charge import duty on goods originating elsewhere in the EU, and laptops are not subject to any other excise duty. So when you know the price of the laptop, it includes all taxes

I went to Germany in February. You need to get an outlet converter that has long prongs because their outlets are concave. I bought one at Radio Shack that didn't fit into the outlet, so my host family went out and bought my one. I don't remember what brand it was, but it adapted to like 150 countries all in one converter. I only charged my digital camera and a friends cell phone using it, so none of my stuff got fried.
2 :
Hello, I don't know a particular brand but you can go to target or walmart and get a converter and plug adapter set for around 20 dollars. The set will have the adapters that you will need in Germany. Your camera and laptop are probably duel voltage and with the plug adapter you can plug them directly into the wall. Read the cable cord to make sure. It will say 100v-240v. This means it doesnt need the converter, just the plug adapter to put in the wall. Donna

Traveling in Germany and don't understand my new Nokia phone

Traveling in Germany and don't understand my new Nokia phone?
Just bought this phone at a local computer/tech store along with a sim card. 1) On the Nokia 2220 phone, all the setup instructions/menus/etc are in German. And 2) when I tried to buy minutes for the Ortel sim card (using my laptop), as soon as I put in country of purchase (Germany), it doesn't let me enter the country (the US) of my credit card (to buy minutes) it only lets me choose Germany, Netherlands or Germany. Can you help me?

it is not because of the phone; it is your sim card. as you bought it from germany, it is probably only designed for the germany network. by buying more minutes with the sim card, it has probably detected the country you are in through IP Address and has also detected a german sim card so will only accept german currency to top up your credit

Can I use my wi-fi in germany

Can I use my wi-fi in germany?
I'm going to Germany this week with my laptop that has a wifi card in it. I'm planning on logging into the local wifi networks there (at cafes and such) and utilizing Skype to keep in touch with friends back home. Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to do this? I heard you can't log onto a network there like you could at a Starbucks, for example, here...
Other - Germany - 3 Answers

I don't know many places here where you can log on to a WiFi network for free. As to technology, that's no problem; but if there is WiFi at all, you will be charged for and need the appropriate access data. However, you can scan for open WiFi networks, and if you find one, use it. (It's technically illegal, but who cares?) Some cafés (and Starbucks) have WiFi and will let you use it for no or moderate fees. Hotels have WiFi, too, but they'll often overcharge you. If you stay with friends, scan for WLANs in the neighborhood and ask if you can hop on. I'd let you use mine anytime if you stayed near my place. (It reaches as far as to the nearest hotel, but don't let anyone know; their management would kill me.) --- Folks, just tell me where in the country there is free WiFi in Germany? I don't know a single small town where there's reasonable WiFi access, and I don't want to spend my time at a McD's just to have WiFi.
2 :
This should work here in Germany. And now a commercial break ;-) At Mc Donald's Cafe you can use wireless LAN for free (you receive a voucher when you buy a coffee or so and the voucher is valid for one hour).
3 :
Sure you can use it! Look out for the WiFi signs at cafes. Note: In Germany WiFi is called "WLAN"

how do I change my laptop from germany to english

how do I change my laptop from germany to english?

Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Goto Control Panel and select "Regional and Language Settings", then follow the stuff in there.
2 :
- In Vista use automatic updates to install English Language Pack. - In XP go to the microsoft website and search for an english LIP of even better, an english MUI. Though I think English is installed by default so you would only need to change the language through Locale options in control panel.
3 :
If you mean changing the operating system's language, you will need an English version of Windows. Product keys are valid across different language versions, so the key that came with your laptop can be used with your new Windows version. You can contact Microsoft and have them send you a CD. Make sure you ask for the right one - Home or Professional. A Home key won't work with Pro and vice versa. There is also something called MUI (multilingual user interface), if you have XP Professional. I don't know how it works, though. If you have Pro, look it up

where can i get a laptop in the usa that also works in germany

where can i get a laptop in the usa that also works in germany?
im moving to germany very soon and i wanna get a laptop but i do not know if it will work there porque they use 220 voltage

Most laptop AC Adapters are autoswitching from 110 to 240v. You'll just need the adapter so it works with the german outlet.
2 :
It is not the laptop that you are concerned about, but the power adapter. It converts the input power (220 or 110v) to the power that your laptop runs on internally. You will need to replace your power converter with one that accepts the input voltage provided at your location. You can get one from the manufacturer or use a universal after-market converter.
3 :
Germany like most of Europe uses 220v, the issue is whether your power adapter is multi switching, most are. Turn the power brick upside down and look at the label, it most likely tells you it is 100-220v in which case it auto senses the input voltage. When you get to Germany find a PC store, take your charger and US cable and ask them for a cable to fit the German power outlet sockets, that is all you need to buy. Here (in Spain) we advise most of our UK, Asian and US clients to just change the cable as the power adaptor does not need to be changed.
4 :
No problem - most laptop power adapters can take 220 Volts "as is". All you will need is a new power cord. (That's the cord that runs from the wall outlet to the power adapter. Again, most laptop power adapters have connectors on that end, so replacing the power cord is easy and cheap.) Just read the sticker on the power adapter first: It will clearly state the voltage range

U.S. laptop use in Germany. Am I okay with just an adapter or European (German) power cord

U.S. laptop use in Germany. Am I okay with just an adapter or European (German) power cord?
I’m buying a new laptop here in the U.S. but will be moving to Germany for a few years. (For several reasons I rather not buy it there) - My understanding is I can safely buy a adapter for their outlets, or supposedly better, buy a whole new power cord once I’m there and the laptop will run fine/safely. Is this understanding correct? Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry not to know the U.S. power supply system but I can give you details of our German one: Voltage: 230 V Frequency: 50 Hz (=50 1/s) I just researched and found out, that your system is completely different. Ask an technician but I think that the transformator, belonging to the laptop, is only useable for 100-127V /60 Hz (unsure information because I'm no electrician). If you won't find further information I would recommend to buy a German transformator e.g. with an output in the span from 15-24 V and current up to 3,5 A(15-20 V)/2,9 V(22-24 V) costs less than 35 Euro in a shop I know. Addenda: I've read that the power supply unit I presented you above, is also usable for 100 V. I suggest to ask the laptop seller whether you can use the power supply or not.
2 :
Most new U.S. laptops are dual voltage and just require a 3-prong plug adaptor. (It will accept the American 3-prong plug that is typical on laptops and has the 2 round prongs for using in German outlets). These run me around $4. 2 prong versions are also available. Right on my power cord, it says "110-220V" which means it will run on USA 110v or European 220V. I've used American laptops in Germany for 10 years and using the little plug adaptor is all I've ever done. I don't think you need a different power cord

How can I easily get a temporary cell phone in Germany

How can I easily get a temporary cell phone in Germany?
I'm leaving Wednesday for German from Chicago. I just realized that although I can call people from my laptop using VOIP, it would be nice to have a cell phone there. I utilize Verizon in the States. Does anyone know of a way to easily get a temporary cell phone once I am there, and before I leave ?

If you're talking about sim-card for your cell and not about phone itself, just go to closest supermarket and buy prepaid sim-card for some 25 euros. It will include some 300 minutes for domestic calls (1 minute is about 10cents no matter where you make your call to). I think, for short term you'll even not need to refill this card. Yeah, it can be a kind of complicated to activate this card- either through internet, or through call, but the thing is, that the activation phone number is not 1-800 and it's only allowed to call this number from home phone- because it costs money. Just buy a sim-card and just put it in your cell, that you can take from US. Don't forget to take some power adaptor (US to EU) for your cell charger.

k here goes, don't know if u have any affiliation with the US Army, but thats gonna be the easiest way, (going on post to any kios, renting a phone for about $30.00 + $10 dollars for 100mins) You can rent one from any Celluar kios in germany however its Expensive, they'll make u buy the phone. You cand Buy a phone card in germany or before you leave in the US, (cheaper), better buy several, they go fast! T-Mobile has service there, then u need to buy the sim card and D1 or D2 rechargeable minutes, cheapest 15euros - 100 euros. (i do the T-Mobile thing), VOIP not a good bet, Black Jack and Vonage, europe has blockers that dont allow connections! and this is after u have a secure, high speed internet! good luck! Last option will be to use euros on the Pay phones or your hotel, emergencys only bout $5.00 a min! Get all the country / area codes from an operator before u leave, I leave Wed 10 Dec, also hit my email if u have futher questions,
4 :
Alex is wrong in one thing: Although the SIM you'll buy may be good for 300 minutes of domestic calls, that doesn't mean that they're good for international calls, too. But generally it's a good idea to go to a phone store (not necessarily a supermarket) and buy a prepaid SIM for your phone. It's a bit tricky to find out the best rates, but I think that's not too important for you. What you need is good network coverage, and the possibility to recharge your card at every supermarket, and as to that, I'd say, use Vodafone. I've been with them for years, prepaid and otherwise, and I'm pretty much satisfied. You'll have to pay 15 or 20 euros for the SIM, with maybe 10 euros to phone off immediately, and can recharge for 15, 30 or 50 euros at virtually any supermarket. You can inform your friends via email about your new German phone number. The wonderful thing about using a German mobile number within Germany is: You'll not be charged for airtime. It's a "caller pays all" scheme. So when your friends call you on your German number, it won't cost you a dime. -- On the other hand, phoning out of Germany may well be around 50 or 60 euro-cents per minute. Even sending a text message to a country not far away like Great Britain cost me 44 euro-cents. So be careful. If you don't want to switch SIMs all the time on your mobile, see if you can borrow an old cellphone from a friend. I'd have suggested you buy one on Ebay (I bought my spare phone there for just 40 euros, and it has worked well now for more than three years), but as you're short on time, this won't work. A voltage adaptor, as has been mentioned, is an absolute MUST; but you can buy these things at the airport. In America! In Europe, you're expected to have your gear ready when you arrive. I've rarely seen an airport store that sells 120-240-Volt adaptors, but rather the other way round. Anyway, you can get a universal adaptor at electronics stores here, for some 20 euros, that are good for all your electrical widgets. But never plug them into a 240 volt wall outlet without using a voltage converter. Most modern devices have a security switch that shuts them down, and nothing will happen. With some, you'll end up with a blown fuse (that can be changed), and some will just be fried. Automatic voltage selection exists in the more expensive charging devices, like for business laptops. But I'm getting off topic now. You asked for an easy way to use a cellphone here, I gave you one. I also own two cellphones, one I use here and one I use in the Czech Republic, and I carry both when I'm there: One to be called and one to call back. You can never have enough spare cellphones, especially when you're a frequent traveller.
5 :
well the sim card will prolly not work since its coded differently... you will prolly have to buy a cheap phone at any of the billion shops with a D1 or a D2 card inside of it then you just simply insert the card and charge teh phone like normal....When you buy the phone you will need an ID of some sorts.
6 :
Get a local German SIM card and a cheap un-locked cell phone from RebelFone, get it delivered overnight before you leave.. try the link below:
7 :
You can also get a cheap prepaid sim card from the retail chain "Aldi". It's called "aldi talk". You can register online, it will then take approx. 6hours to activate your card. You can write text meassages and make national and international calls. It's really quiet cheap for Germany. The starter pack costs 20 Euro, inclusive of 10 Euro, which you can immediately use for calls and texts. Enjoy your trip to Germany. (Sorry the website of aldi talk is only in german, but I'm sure you'll find somebody to help you register.)
8 :
Go to the O2 shop. They are the easiest to deal with. One thing to note, you will probably need your passport. They record who is using what SIM card. I went into Saturn, which is an electronics store here, and they wanted my passport and proof of residency
