Anyone stationed in Germany

Anyone stationed in Germany?
My brother just arrived in Germany (Airforce.) He said his cell phone and laptop are not working. If you were/are stationed there, how did you communicate with you family in the states? He put coins in a payphone smart guy! That gets expensive! Alwaysotr7: are you always that mean? I hope that coldness gets you places in life.

Tell him to go to an internet café, but he managed to let you know about his communication problems, so apparently, he can communicate
2 :
It depends on the type of cell phone he has. Most likely, his best bet is to just buy a new one. I recommend him to get a pre-paid phone (D1, D2, etc) because the contract phones can be a hassle if/when he deploys and they are a pain to cancel. His laptop will work fine. He may need a European outlet adapter, but nothing more. If he is stationed at Ramstein, he could go to the PAX terminal and use the free wi-fi there to keep in contact. I don't know if other AFBs provide the same service. For simple communication, his absolute best, most cost-effective choice is to just get a regular landline. It will cost more up front, but international calls cost pennies. Literally. The AT&T phone cards are a rip off (spend $20, talk for 18 minutes.) In contrast, an average 18 minute call to the US will cost less than $0.60 on a landline. And if he does not want a landline, he can always go with DSL and use Skype, Vonage, or Yahoo Voice. DSL service in Germany generally puts the service in the US to shame. It costs a little more (usually around $70 at the current exchange rate). He has options. Just make sure he doesn't try them all. He will be out serious money.
3 :
He can easily establish a home phone and get on an unlimited calling plan back to the states through Deutschetelecom. And that will also give him the option of having internet. I lived in the dorms and it wasnt to expensive to get a phone and internet when I was in Germany. Off base he can get the same setup. There is no reason for him to have issues contacting home.
4 :
Tell him to get a German cell phone. The American ones do not work because they have a different network there. He can also get a German internet provider so he can email from his laptop.
5 :
Maybe he doesn't want to talk to you, because it should be no problem if on a military base

get a desktop unless you want to spend 3000 dollars.

By CPU Intel By Brand Apple Mac By OS Windows XP
3 :
Apple MAC computers are always the best. I am going to give it a 9 Dell inspiron 15 R is a good computer too.- 9
4 :
LOVE your question! definitely the intel i7, any brand would do, but i would recommend apple or sony vaio for the battery life. about the OS.. windows 7 ultimate is great and you have more freedom over the hardware(processors, coolers, graphic cards) and stuff like that. while mac os x binds you to the products of apple, I myself would go with the win 7 ultimate just because of the hardware freedom, but the last one is definitely up to you and it doesn't affect the performance of the software.
5 :
i7 is best; don't focus on brand; Windows 7 is definitely more compatible with the the programs you will be running for graphic design. Also, try this laptop recommender: http://laptoprec.com

you've to install the language packs. i.e. goto start > control panel > regional and language settings change the country / goto the last tab > tick the languages you need and then insert the XP/Vista cd when it asks

That depends. If your laptop was purchased in the UK or other PAL supporting countries, then yes. If your laptop was purchased in America, then no, it's NTSC...

Actually they are not as bothered by people purchasing movies from overseas as they used to be. This is one of the great things about DVDs. With VHS tape, you not only had to have a PAL compatable player, but also a PAL compatable TV. Not anymore. A region free/code changed DVD player will do all of that for viewing on NTSC TVs. Most computer DVD players are now region free, especially laptops, since people take them with on travels. It would depend more on the brand and how it was purchased. Many bought directly from the manufacturer are not region free, but bought in a store, generally are. I purchased my laptop in a store and the player is region free. A friend bought the same model through the manufacturer, it is not region free. The best way to find out is to look at your users manual/specification or even contact Dell. There are also many home players that can be purchased "region free" or players that can be purchased and easily changed to a specific region or "region free". How I figured it out was I found a player that was within my price range, and typed the brand/model number into a search followed by "hack" (Phillips ABC1234 hack). This brought up several pages that gave easy directions to change the region codes. I would recommend only one that the code can be changed by using the remote. There are some that require the change be made by downloading an update, dropping it on a DVD and inserting the DVD. If you mess this process up, you end up with a new paperweight. You may think that looking at DVD players and then searching if they are changeable is tedious, but trust me, you will most likely get a hit with in a couple of tries
