Can I play a PAL DVD in my Dell studio laptop?
I have a Dell studio 1558 laptop and I want to buy an all regions PAL DVD from germany. I need to know if my laptop will play the DVD at all.

That depends. If your laptop was purchased in the UK or other PAL supporting countries, then yes. If your laptop was purchased in America, then no, it's NTSC...

Actually they are not as bothered by people purchasing movies from overseas as they used to be. This is one of the great things about DVDs. With VHS tape, you not only had to have a PAL compatable player, but also a PAL compatable TV. Not anymore. A region free/code changed DVD player will do all of that for viewing on NTSC TVs. Most computer DVD players are now region free, especially laptops, since people take them with on travels. It would depend more on the brand and how it was purchased. Many bought directly from the manufacturer are not region free, but bought in a store, generally are. I purchased my laptop in a store and the player is region free. A friend bought the same model through the manufacturer, it is not region free. The best way to find out is to look at your users manual/specification or even contact Dell. There are also many home players that can be purchased "region free" or players that can be purchased and easily changed to a specific region or "region free". How I figured it out was I found a player that was within my price range, and typed the brand/model number into a search followed by "hack" (Phillips ABC1234 hack). This brought up several pages that gave easy directions to change the region codes. I would recommend only one that the code can be changed by using the remote. There are some that require the change be made by downloading an update, dropping it on a DVD and inserting the DVD. If you mess this process up, you end up with a new paperweight. You may think that looking at DVD players and then searching if they are changeable is tedious, but trust me, you will most likely get a hit with in a couple of tries
