I have a computer that is 6 years old. Time to get another one.?
I don't know what to buy but have been thinking about buying up to date cards..but they look like they would cost more alone than a new computer. I am stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Are laptops more powerful? Need advice. Thanks!! Demilspencer at yahoo dot com.

laptops are more expensive for bang to buck ratio. after 6 years it probably is time for an upgrade laptops are good because they are portable and easily moved around.

laptops are generally slightly underpowered than desktops but laptops are really comparable these days. if your PC is over 5 years old it's time to upgrade...

so just update the cards and max out your ram youll be just as happy

it's probably around the Pentium 3-4 & Athlon Xp era remember age doesn't >>>necessarily<<< relate to performance. How come you want to upgrade;if it suits you fine then why spend money on something you don't need? What exactly is lacking on that machine? please tell me so i can better answer your question. a RAM or hard drive upgrade may fix your issues, it may or may not cost more depends. if it uses DDR RAM (not PC133) then you can get a gig for about 50 USD or a better harddrive more about that much. laptops usually have to sacrifice performance in order to be so portible = this means that if you had a desktop that was $1000 and a laptop that was $1000 the desktop would win by a lot also you can't upgrade some components on a laptop like you can on a desktop (monitor, graphics cards, keyboard) if you want the best bang for your buck get a desktop of you like laptops though then by all means get one if you use your computer for e mail and writing documents and they things like that you should just back up all your data and reinstall your OS and maybe up the RAM a bit and it will be just fine. as a general rule, if it costs more then 200 USD to get the performance you want through upgrades then you should just junk the whole thing and get a new computer hope this helps, e mail me if you have further questions on concerns surgeshamray@yahoo.com

To your question, "Is it time to get another one?" I'd say, the answer is, only, you need a new one if the one you have, isn't doing all you want, as quickly as you want! Too much these days, folks will try to convince you to get into the fad of having the "latest and greatest"! We all try to consume more...not very cost-effective, in the long run, and if you think about it, not very "earth friendly". (Think of all that hazardous waste of disposed computers!) I have a sort-of new HP and a four-year-old IBM, and they're BOTH workhorses! But, if you NEED a new one, then get a fully new one. A laptop can do anything a desktop can do (IMHO). Get a "souped up" high power laptop whose durability and capabilities far exceed your present needs, and it'll last for years! Cost effective and earth friendly!

It depends on how much you want to spend and what you going to be using the computer for. If you want something fast and large storage you will be spending a lot. Also, if you do not have enough money to buy the new laptop, you can try refurbish computers they cheaper. Are laptops more powerful? it depends on which laptops some are powerful than others. I like Sony, HP, Toshiba and dell. Again like I said it depends on how much you willing to spend and your needs. Average new laptops that are powerful ranges from $1,000 - $4000. But for refurbish you can get it lot cheaper. Some Desktop new computers are even more cheaper than laptops. thanks http://www.akoagtech.com

For what you might have to put into it, it might be cheaper to buy a new one.

Yes i agree with the poster that said that others would try to recommend you a top of the line system that will cost a small fortune but will be an overkill for your needs ^^ I have a 2+ year old computer and i am thinking of upgrading at year 3 hehe. Basically i see 3 catogories of usage: 1) Surfing/Word/Spreadsheet (everyday use) Ave cpu/Low gfx card/80GB hard disk/17" LCD 2) DVD Movies/Music/Lite gaming (multimedia) Ave-Good cpu/Mid gfx card/250GB hard disk/19" LCD 3) Gaming rig (Budget-Uber range) Ave-Good cpu/Mid-Good gfx card/good psu/160GB hard disk/19-22" LCD/possibly cooling hardware I am referring to desktops because they are sturdier, less propriety issues (for DIYs) and i can't enjoy with a smallish laptop screen sorry hehe
